HARRINGTON LIGHTS

is pleased to provide the following information to help you choose light bulbs that will provide the amount of light you want and in consideration of the wattage and life hours of those bulbs.

ESTIMATING LIGHT BULB DATA

General rule-of-thumb:

  •    Wattage is reduced by about 14% from the indicated wattage of a 130V light bulb when used at 120V.
  •    Lumens are reduced by about 25% from the indicated lumen output of a 130V light bulb when used at 120V.
  •    Life hours are increased about 2.8 times the indicated average life of a 130V light bulb when used at 120V.

EXCEPTIONS to the above rules are (in part)

that sometimes the data on the packaging of some 130V bulbs has already been altered to estimate performance at 120V.

If there is no side-by-side table on the package that compares performance at both voltages, try to find a 120V bulb from the same manufacturer and compare the data.  It should be readily apparent if they have already done the math on the 130V package.

Sometimes bulbs are designed to have particular characteristics at 120V and are labeled 120V.  However, the life hours and lumen output mimic more closely the characteristics of 130V bulbs.  The best way we have found to make comparisons is by looking at the lumen output range of several different bulbs of any given wattage.  While we have not yet assembled this data for inclusion in our reference area, some of this sort of information can be gathered from our web pages.
